THE STORY OF COMITTI
Comitti of London have been makers of the finest quality clocks and barometers for over 150 years. Many of the styles made in the early days continue to be available today, they are recognized as English Classics and the originals sought after as valuable antiques.
It was the classical architecture of the 18th and 19th century which inspired England’s greatest furniture designers. Thomas Sheraton, George Hepplewhite and Thomas Chippendale.
Clockmakers were influenced by the fashion for the finest quality cabinetwork created by these makers. Georgian style and the skills of master craftsman such as veneer cutters and marquetry makers were employed using exotic woods sourced from around the world to create and decorate the visible areas of the finest clock cabinets.
The processes of hand French polishing are employed to enhance the natural beauty of the cabinetwork. The pores of the wood surfaces are filled and sanded using fine papers to create the base before applying the polish lacquers. Finally the surface is pulled over and rubbed with beeswax to achieve a rich natural patina.
Marquetry is an art form that can be traced back to early Egyptian and Assyrian craftsman and is essentially decoration achieved by creating patterns or pictures from veneers of wood or other materials.
The company continues to this day as a family-run business designing and making traditional and contemporary pieces.
Today Comitti enjoys an international reputation for outstanding workmanship and service.
